Early Years Practitioner

The End-Point Assessment for the Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship includes a Professional Discussion (with portfolio) and a Knowledge Test.

What they do

Early Years Practitioners are found in a range of private and public settings, such as full day care, children’s centres, pre-schools, reception classes, playgroups, nursery schools, home-based provision, hospitals, social care settings, out of school environments and local authority provision. Those who occupy the role deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements set by the government for the learning, development and care of children from birth to age 5 in both indoor and outdoor environments.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to work and interact directly with children on a day to day basis supporting the planning of and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes within the ethos of the setting. In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with parents, children, colleagues and wider multi-agency professionals and partners such as health visitors, social workers and speech and language therapists.

End-Point Assessment Components for the Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship

  • Professional Discussion (with portfolio)
  • Knowledge Test

Professional Discussion (with Portfolio of Evidence)

The Professional Discussion is a two-way discussion involving both the End-Point Assessor and the Apprentice actively listening and participating in a formal conversation. It gives the Apprentice the opportunity to make detailed and proactive contributions to confirm their competency across the KSBs mapped to this method.

The Professional Discussion will last for 90 minutes with a minimum of 10 questions asked based on the End-Point Assessor’s review of the Apprentice’s portfolio, which will be submitted at Gateway. Follow up questions may be asked to assess the Apprentice’s depth of understanding and skills and behaviours, and authenticate their Portfolio of Evidence. It should take place in a quiet room, free from distractions and influence.

Knowledge Test

The Knowledge Test is a multiple-choice test that can be taken online or in paper-based format. The test consists of 40 questions that will test the Knowledge criteria assigned to this assessment component. The Apprentice will have 60 minutes to complete the test, which must be taken in a controlled environment.
